Hanging of the Greens is a long-established Christian tradition of decorating worship and other spaces for the season of Advent. For me, it is an outward, visible, and physical way of reminding myself of the inner, spiritual work I can do to spur the anticipation of the good news of the birth of Jesus—good news that at times is so hard to cling to through the muck and gristle of living in this busy, turbulent, weary world. Because Hanging of the Greens involves decorating the entire church, it takes many volunteers!
We’ll be doing this work at Countryside immediately after worship on Sunday, Nov. 24. There will also be a luncheon featuring homemade soups (and a soup contest!) served throughout. A special Children’s Tree is a new addition this year! Our Director of Spiritual Formation, Heather Moran, organized a project on Wednesday evening, Nov. 20, in which Countryside’s little ones got to decorate a special ornament to help decorate the new tree!
Volunteers should stop at the table in the Narthex after worship on Sunday to check their assignments. If you haven’t had a chance to sign up – they’ll be happy to help you! If you want to bring soup for the contest, please get in touch with Diane Scott at dianes@countrysideucc.org or text her at 402-707-1556. For any other questions, feel free to connect with me at adamw@countrysideucc.org. I hope you’ll join us in intentionally welcoming this season of anticipation through our weariness!
