The national setting United Church of Christ is issuing an emergency appeal to assist those affected by the magnitude 7.8 earthquake, centered in the heavily populated area of southeastern Turkey. Thousands have been killed in the region, including in neighboring Syria. The massive earthquake, which was felt as far away as Israel and Cyprus, demolished buildings and buried countless people in their collapse.
The number of those killed in the region, already wracked with the wounds of a decade-long war in Syria, is expected to rise.
