We All Are One in Mission

The word “Mission” is one that is often associated with the dark sides of Christianity, but mission is also a way to refer to the broader work of the entire body of Christ. Our scripture today and message speak to this definition, and it is important to consider this hymn through that lens, as the text risks sounding like a call to evangelism if taken out of context.

Instead, this hymn speaks to a common mission – one to touch the lives of others, embodying God’s love – and the place in which each and every one of us fit in that mission.

We all are one in mission, we all are one in call,
Our varied gifts united by Christ, the Lord of all.
A single, great commission compels us from above
To plan and work together that all may know Christ’s love.

We all are called for service to witness in God’s name.
Our ministries are diff’rent, our purpose is the same:
To touch the lives of others by God’s surprising grace
So ev’ry folk and nation may feel God’s warm embrace.

Now let us be united and let our song be heard.
Now let us be a vessel for God’s redeeming Word.
We all are one in mission, we all are one in call,
Our varied gifts united by Christ, the Lord of all.

There Are Many Ways of Sharing

This hymn is written by New York based pastor and hymnist Carolyn Gillette, whose hymns we have frequently used at Countryside (“God May Your Justice Roll Down,” “We Reclaim the Name of Jesus,” and others). It is based on 1st Corinthians 12, and speaks to the diversity of gifts within the body of Christ and the church, and the unity of our shared mission.

There are many ways of sharing, But God’s Spirit gives each one.
There are different ways of caring; It’s one Lord whose work is done.
God, whose gifts are overflowing, May we hear you when you call;
Keep us serving, keep us growing For the common good of all.

We’ve been baptized in the waters! We’ve been given work to do.
When you call your sons and daughters, You give gifts for serving you.
God, we join in celebration Of the talents you impart.
Bless each baptized one’s vocation; Give each one a servant’s heart.

All are blest by gifts you give us; Some are set apart to lead.
Give us Jesus’ love within us As we care for those in need.
Give us faith to make decisions; Give us joy to share your Word.
Give us unity and vision As we serve your church and world.
